CROSS POLLINATOR Review
BDSP has released their first plugin Cross Pollinator, a four part delay plugin with complex routing, distortion, and filtering. Each of cross pollinators 4 delays can be routed to feed into any other delay with adjustable panning allowing you to create complex feedback matrixes. These feedback paths are visualized in a very helpful way with a flower shaped routing matrix. The UI is nice and straight forward with color coordination to make things easier to navigate. Cross polinator comes with 100 presets to get you started with a variety of delay ideas.
Each delay also gets a drive control and a filter with morphable filter types. These unfortunately are not inserted into the feedback path, they are sent to at the delay’s output. The delays can be free or tempo synced with some unusual divisions available such as quintuplets and septuplets. As for the short delay metrics I always love to take note of, the shortest delay time is 1 ms, with 1 ms resolution. One interesting factor is that even when the delays are tempo synced, you can unlatch Cross Pollinator from the Daw tempo, allowing you to have timing divided delays, but set to a different BPM. Finally there are a few macros which can be routed to any controls with adjustable depth. This means you can set up macro systems that require less individual tweaking of delay sends and create something more playful.
I inquired with BDSP about future updates as they sponsored a video (and by proxy this review) about Cross Pollinator. They say that there are plans to add LFOs and envelope followers and perhaps more in the future. I did some testing with external LFOs and the delays seem to handle them well with nice pitching effects as the timing moves around, so I really look forward to these updates. It’s always encouraging for me to see what new companies come up with.
