FLEX CHORUS Review

Minimal Audio is releasing each of the effects built into Current as standalone plugins. One more off the list is Flex Chorus, a multi-delay based chorus effect. I need to do a whole chorus shootout, as each chorus tends to have a particular character and ”vibe”, but often don’t do a whole lot for me to really talk about. Flex can have anywhere from 2 to 24 voices of chorus in either glass or smooth mode. Each mode sounds slightly different with smooth being a bit more blurry, and glass being more resonant.

The modulation can be tempo synced, randomized, or if you desire, completely ignored all together. I really enjoy when chorus/phaser/flanger effects allow you to ignore modulation and use them as static or manually controlled tonal shapers. Flex has a few resonant sweet spots and can even approximate a reverb in the right conditions.

The multi-band section allows you to bypass the highs and lows from being effected by the chorus, with control over their crossover frequencies. This can be a great way to add chorus to the body of a signal without ruining transients or sub bass material.

All of the current effects share similar routing and input/output options, it’s nice to have a simple clipper/limiter built into effects like these and the UI is quite pretty seeing all the voices dance around the display. Chorus can be a very pleasant effect, but also a fairly limited one, I tend to avoid it, but now with some more solid options like Flex, I think I’ll reach for it more often.
