MOODAL Review

Tritik Audio’s Moodal is quite a unique plugin, A crazy modal resonator with loads of ways to sculpt your resonance.
A fairly simple plugin on the right side, with some master controls to adjust the over all settings, contrasted on the left with 3 boxes where you can draw and save custom curves for density, decay, and gain. Moodal is by no means a jack of all trades, it does one thing, and one thing well. That thing might not be incredibly useful to everyone, but for those of us who love playing with resonators, it’s really a ton of fun.

The drawable curves are where things really get interesting, allowing you to shape hundreds of spectral bands all al once, and get interesting decay/ volume mixing for each band as well. There’s really not a whole lot to say here, it’s the kind of plugin you should 100% demo before purchasing, and you’ll either love it, or never see a reason to use it. The UI is minimal and old school, and that kinda gives it a weird experimental personality.

How I use it: Personally I just kinda mess around and draw something in with the density curve until I get a tone that feels good, then I sculpt the result using decay time and gain to get a more dynamic tone. The spectral constraint controls can be a great way to get some very atonal and inharmonic sounds. You can automate the master decay and filter to mimic muting and releasing the resonator. If I want to get really glitchy and out of control I’ll modulate the spectral constraint controls via bitwigs randomizer, but it’s worth noting this can get out of control and loud easily, so it’s best to record this and sample the good bits.

if you’re looking for plugins similar to Moodal, be sure to check out Polyverse SuperModal and even Reaktor’s Prism which can be used as an effect and also Reason’s new Objekt synthesizer. I plan to do a deeper dive into resonators in the future, they are a fun tool to add some interesting alternate tonal variety to your sounds.
